New this year was the inclusion of upwind / downwind racing
kitesurfers. Patrick Rynne led the charge after Dan Kerckhoff
broke a fin on his board and retired shortly after the start. So
how did our lone kite racer do? Respectably but didn't win for
several reasons: 2 miles behind when we crossed 7½ minutes
behind, myself 1 mile downwind while he was still going upwind another
mile. (I stopped briefly to mark the spot where we crossed on my
GPS track). Most importantly though, he didn't finish the race
due to his safety concerns about being 2 miles offshore to round the
Port Everglades marker. He wanted to get our opinion as to how
he'd have done if he'd finished the race. Pretty loaded question
as if asking how would I do if I cut through the infield in a NASCAR
race? Going upwind angle was not as good as the formula
windsurfers with both myself and Dave Kashy beating him to the upwind
mark. Downwind I never saw him so I can't weigh in.
A party at Ron & Sue's followed the return of
all the competitors. Prizes were once again awesome with the Adventure
Sports Miami had incredible prizes
